BIRGER. sustains its awareness campaign around General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Rwanda

GDPR becomes effective worldwide on 25th May 2018. Non-compliance to GDPR will have adverse financial consequences on all organisations dealing directly or indirectly with Europe in the form of penalties and fines. 
 
After creating awareness around GDPR in Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Tanzania, BIRGER. continues its campaign by delivering two additional conferences in Kigali, Rwanda. Both events were held on 6th February 2018 and focused on GDPR, its relevance to Rwanda and the importance of a cyber-resiliency framework. 
 
BIRGER.’s participants were Jacques Harel, Parwez Bhugalee, Victor Kagimu and Lenah Chacha, who started the campaign at the Carnegie Mellon University - Africa to raise students’ awareness around GDPR and its relevance. In the afternoon, they delivered the second conference to the Rwandan business community.
 
BIRGER. highlighted the opportunity for institutions and organisations to leverage on the GDPR framework to improve their cyber security posture. Parwez also presented the findings of BIRGER.’s Cyber Security survey carried out during the second semester of 2017 in the Indian Ocean Islands (IOI) and in East Africa. Through this survey, BIRGER. has identified the cyber security threats and challenges facing our region. The BIRGER. CYIndex, which measures the level of maturity of respondents’ cyber security posture, was also unveiled.  The BIRGER. CYIndex is built using a similar framework to GDPR relying on five key functions: Identify – Protect –Detect – Respond – Recover.
