The sixth article’s theme is ‘Staff Well-being: Emotional debriefing after a Disruptive Event’. This article provides insights how emotional debriefing may support staff well-being and action points for fostering a supportive work environment and enhancing overall Resiliency.
Introduction
In the aftermath of a disruptive event, the well-being of staff members is paramount to the Resiliency and continuity of an organisation. Emotional debriefing is a structured process aimed at providing support and processing emotions after a challenging event. It provides employees an opportunity to reflect on their experiences, express their feelings, and get the necessary support to cope with the psychological impact of the disruptive event.
Prioritising Staff Well-being through Emotional Debriefing
- Creating a Safe Space: Emotional debriefing sessions should provide a safe and confidential environment for employees to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. Facilitators should foster an atmosphere of empathy, trust, and respect.
- Facilitating Open Communication: Encourage open and honest communication during emotional debriefing sessions, allowing employees to express their emotions, concerns, and reactions to the disruptive event. Active listening and validation of emotions are key components of effective debriefing.
- Providing Psychological Support: Offer access to professional counsellors or mental health resources to support employees who may be experiencing heightened stress, anxiety, or trauma as a result of the disruptive event. These resources can provide individualised support and coping strategies tailored to employees' needs.
- Normalising Reactions: Help employees understand that their emotional responses to the disruptive event are normal and valid. By normalising reactions such as fear, sadness, or anger, organisations can reduce stigma and promote a culture of understanding and support.
We recommend the following measures:
To prioritise staff well-being through emotional debriefing after a disruptive event, organisations can take the following action points:
- Establishing Emotional Debriefing Protocols: Develop clear protocols and guidelines for conducting emotional debriefing sessions, including scheduling, facilitation techniques, and follow-up support.
- Training Facilitators: Provide training to designated facilitators or managers on effective communication skills, active listening, and psychological first aid to ensure they are equipped to support employees during debriefing sessions.
- Promoting Awareness and Participation: Raise awareness about the importance of emotional debriefing and encourage employees to participate in sessions voluntarily. Communicate the purpose and benefits of debriefing, emphasising its role in promoting psychological well-being and resiliency.
- Evaluating Effectiveness: Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of emotional debriefing initiatives through feedback surveys, focus groups, or other assessment methods. Use insights gained to refine and improve the debriefing process over time.
By prioritising staff well-being through emotional debriefing after a disruptive event, organisations demonstrate their commitment to supporting employees' mental health and resiliency. These initiatives not only foster a supportive work environment but also contribute to the overall Resiliency and continuity of the organisation by ensuring that employees are equipped to cope with the emotional impact of crises and continue to perform effectively in their roles.
