See Yourself in Cyber Security with BIRGER.
October marks the Cyber Security Awareness Month and the theme for 2024 is “Secure Our World”.
With the increasing reliance on digital technology, the threat of cyber-attacks has become a significant concern for individuals, businesses, and governments.
Cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated, and our region is experiencing a rise in targeted attacks, including ransomware and threats to critical sectors like healthcare. Insider threats are also increasing. These attacks can have devastating consequences, causing financial losses, data breaches, and reputational damage. At the same time, to counter these threats, regulatory bodies and government are enforcing measures hence compelling organisations and individuals to comply to these measures with tight deadlines.
Cyber Security today is not optional anymore and must form part of every good governance and Resiliency framework, as well as the daily life of individuals at large.
"Secure Our World": A Call to Action for Everyone
The theme " Secure Our World" serves as a powerful reminder that Cyber Security is not just an IT issue; it is everyone's responsibility. Individuals, organisations and governments have a role to play in protecting themselves in the digital world.
Taking Responsibility: Best Practices for Individuals and Organisations
Some key steps you can take to improve your Cyber Security posture:
Individuals:
- Implement strong passwords and utilise multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Be cautious with email attachments and online links.
- Keep your devices and software up-to-date with the latest security patches.
- Be mindful of what information you share online.
Organisations:
- Holistic approach: Proper governance in place, build a culture of security awareness and implementing robust security measures, such as Zero trust architectures, NewGen firewalls, multi-factor authentication (MFA) and Privilege Access Management (PAM)
- Continuous monitoring: IT Infrastructure, network and end-points should be continuously monitored for Cyber Security incidents, with management of all events to be entrusted by your preferred Security Operation Centre (SOC) on a 24/7 basis.
- Effective incident response planning: have a clear and tested plan in place to respond to cyber-attacks, including procedures for reporting incidents, containing the damage, and restoring systems and data.
- Proactive approach to risk management: identify potential threats, assessing their impact and develop mitigation strategies. This involves regular testing of security systems and protocols to ensure effectiveness. This process requires the full commitment of Top Management.
- Privacy, Integrity and security of personal data: Deploy Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools, encryption and strong policies which will prevent transfer of unauthorised files, restrict confidential data transfers and monitor real-time sharing of all information. Comply with relevant regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
- Commitment to continuous improvement: regularly review and update security measures and incident response plans to adapt to evolving threats and vulnerabilities.
- Business Continuity Management (BCM): Business Continuity processes should remain active to ensure timely recovery in the event of a cyber incident.
